today was my parents' 26th anniversary.
my dad took the day off to spend it with her, no, us.
mom n dad gave me a slight induction on our 'family biz'.
(they've decided to give me a family 'internship' since i cant seem to get any)
in just a few hrs in the morn, ive met 2 of our existing tenants to negoiate the terms for breaking lease, picked up a ger who was keen to rent our apartment and an agent to view a shop that we wanted to buy.
(my dad's sweet enough to think of buying a property as an anniversary gift. how totally practical.)
highlight of the day was the auction at M hotel.
it was my parents' first auction n they decided to bring me along.
in all, we were shown a total of 40 plus properties on slideshow.
there were an assortment of residential and commerical (shops, offices n factories) properties.
as they told us the starting bid and floor area, my dad n i mentally calculated the rough 'price per square feet' which wld be followed by a heated debate on which property was more 'value for money' with comparions to previous properties on the auction list.
flo: wah liew. chk this out. 2 mil for this warehouse of 37,000 square ft. its like a bloody mansion man. we can 'san dai tong tang' once ive gotten married n given birth.
mom: flo, we r not allowed to stay in a warehouse. govt regulations. warehouses r only meant for storing goods, not people
flo: but then according to the movies ive watched, the struggling artists n act cool pple all stay in warehouses. y cant we follow them? its a very gd deal.
mom: (throws flo a 'r u out of ur mind look?') pls stop watching those movies. they put weird ideas in ur head.

my mom n i had our eye on this bungalow situated in bedok.
it had a land area of 6000 plus sq ft with 5000 plus sq ft build in area with an asking price of only 1.56mil.
'cheap cheap' was all my mom n i thought abt.
we kept bugging my dad to chk the place out.
once the auction ended w no one bidding for a single property (yes, the economy is that pathetic), we located the agent in charge of the bungalow n headed down.
in the end, after taking a quick glance, our hearts fell as we realised that the house was not as big as they made it out to b. though the agent protested that he did not lie abt the build in area, we cld see that the house was barely bigger than my present one. there was no way we could tear the present house down and build 2 houses on that same plot of land.
so, bye to the bungalow.

mom: u shld go n take up driving lessons.
flo: orr.
mom: i wld pay for the lessons.
flo: orr.
mom: n buy u a 2nd hand car once uve passed the test.
flo: orr.
(after much silence)
flo: lets presume, that a car wld cost s40k while an average taxi ride only cost s10. so taking 40k divided by 10, that means i can take 4k taxi rides. n lets presume that i take 400 such rides in a yr, that wld then work out to 10 yrs (4000/400) of taxi rides.
mom: quite reasonable. since ur car wld b scrapped after 10 yrs
flo: yes, but u neglected to input the petrol n parking fees.
mom: hmm, taxis r cheaper. ok dont learn driving.
flo: (smug smile)
managed to squirm out of learning how to drive. i prefer to b driven ard. makes me feel more like a boss. shrugs. hate to chaffeur pple ard too. utterly self centered.
but then again.
after ive given it much thot.
the 40k worth of taxi rides in 10 yrs wld have to b forked out by me.
i think,
i shld just get the *beep* car.
i simply dont have the 40k to throw ard.

had a major treasure hunt w my household tonite.
wrapped my sim card in tissue n promptly lost it.
mayhem reigned; beds dusted, bags searched, pockets emptied, dustbins rummaged.
over n over again.
(now my rooms messier than b4.)
i got to thank my lucky stars that it wasnt the sim that my mom warned me never to lose.
found it in my bin which was filled w tissue papers 3 traumatic hrs later.
